About The River Within is a photographic exploration of the Thames from a kayak.
The familiar Thames is reframed seen from so close to the water as I follow its changing character 215 miles from source to sea. Every day thousands of people walk along its banks, visiting the many venues, attractions, cafes and restaurants or find tranquillity along the Thames Path. Most look down on the river from the outside, from the banks.
But few see the river in the way that I do. To me, the Thames is a living, breathing entity with its tides, strong currents and waves. Even urban stretches can feel quite wild when seen from the perspective of this little boat.
In January 2017 I began this journey at Kemble in the Cotswolds, initially on foot until the water was deep enough for me to use a kayak. I continued downriver through Cricklade, Lechlade, Oxford, Reading and on to London.
This is a work in progress, and I am currently continuing my journey to the sea.
