The weather forecast was for heavy rain and as we got onto the water the heavens opened and the river became a carpet of raindrops bouncing back into the air as they landed on the river's surface. Paddling with the incoming tide, we reached Eel Pie island a couple of hours later. The water was about three feet from the road when we arrived and it was still almost an hour until high water.

While inside the pub having lunch, the tide continued to rise and quickly flooded the road. In the patio area across the road, a gas bottle and several wooden barrels started to float. A metal bin floated into the road and sank in front of a silver car, which had been parked in front of the pub. No one in the pub knew who owned the silver car.

Unfortunately by high tide the silver car was standing in river water that was now one and a half feet deep. It's owner, a builder who had been working near by, returned to his car and tried to start it. The car moved a few feet, coughed and spewed a large amount of white gunge from the engine and wheel arches then died. The tide retreated as quickly as it had come in. The builders were hoping the car would be ok when it dried out, I doubt it was. We paddled back to Barn Elms thinking about the poor guys whose car had just drowned, It was still raining, the river looked stark, grey and desolate but somehow beautiful - as it always does.

These now classic cars form a pile of twisted, rusting metal, wires, number plates and chassis that extends from the base to near the top of the mine shaft and sits in a deep pool of water.

In the top of a couple of the pictures a white shaft of light can be seen, this is from the hole through which these cars were dumped.

Compared with today's concerns for clean emissions and safe recycling the 1970's attitude towards the car and the environment was a little different.

Adits were cut into the mountain on different levels with steep inclines linking the different levels and railway tracks carried trucks through the mine to transport the silica to the surface.

Exploring this mine is awesome. It begins with a large underground space, the roof being propped up by a series of rock pillars. It's built on an include and making our way downwards we reach the flooded section of the mine. The colours in the rock are beautiful; ochres. blues, oranges, reds and underwater - green, even though there is no light here for photosynthesis.

Climbing a steep incline and following the railway tracks is awkward; partly because of how steep it is and partly because of the amount of loose rock and gravel that now lies on that incline. We come to a wynch, rusted and broken but fascinating. It had at one time lifted trucks up and down this incline to remove the silica from the mine.

This was one of the first times I had used light painting techniques to photograph mines, in which a powerful torch is used to light areas of the image during a long exposure and are a part of my "Hollow Mountain" project.

http://www.h2ophotography.com/hollow-mountain

They won awards at "Hidden Earth" The UK's National Caving Conference and Exhibition including the Moore Books competition winner and Best New Comer

The Hundertwasserhaus, built between 1983 and 1985, is an expressionist landmark in Vienna, and is based on the concepts of Austrian artist Friedensreich Hundertwasser with architects Joseph Krawina and Peter Pelikan. It comprises of 53 apartments, offices, and over 250 trees - many of which are growing inside the building, poking through the windows and growing up the outside. Many more trees are on the roof. The floor around the building is steeply undulating and I nearly tripped over more than once while photographing this building as the brain doesn't expect a road surface to have large, steep mounds. The undulating floor continues inside the building. Highly decorated mosaics draw lines and patterns around the building, which again continue inside.

Friedensreich Hundertwasser was born in 1928 and began his career as a painter. After travelling around Morocco, Tunisia, Nepal, Tokyo and Siberia, Hundertwasser developed an abstract, decorative, vibrant and two dimensional style utilising ornamental spirals, circles, meanders and biomorphic shapes. But from the early 1950's he became increasingly interested in architecture. His designs incorporated the same elements as his earlier paintings, combining natural life, trees, hills, colour, pattern and meandering shapes to create beautiful and unique structures.

Based on the concepts and designs of Friedensreich Hundertwasser, it was built to meet the needs and wishes of the thousands of people who visit the Hundertwasserhaus each year, an apartment building designed in the same style, which is just across the road.

Friedensreich Hundertwasser at the opening of Hundertwasser Village is quoted a saying:

“With the Village for my friend Kalke I realized another piece of a more human and nature orientated architecture. I have been working as a doctor for architecture so to say. We did not tear down and rebuild it but used existing building fabric and improved it by changing and adding to the building and inserting components with new shapes and colours.”

“On the roof a forest sprouts much to the pleasure of the neighbours and inside something like a romantic, narrow, oriental bazar exists where you like to linger for a while.”
